Limewashing
Lime washing is a process by which a liming solution (white stain) is used to change the natural appearance of the floor into a white milky semi transparent finish. The number of coats will determine the intensity of the finish by gradually reducing the stains transparency and leading towards a more solid colour appearance. Both water and oil based liming solutions are available to be used in conjunction with the preferred finish. Each of these has its own benefits and drawbacks that need to be considered prior to application based on individual circumstances.
Water based lime washing
Oil based lime washing (no longer used by 'myfloor')
Water based lime washing
- Produces a beautiful white finish
- Can use coloured stains to achieve a pastel look
- Very rapid drying
- Compatible with all types of finishes
- Minimal darkening over time when used in conjunction with water based finishes
- May cause “tannin rich” timbers to develop a greenish tinge
- Leads to oxidisation of metal particles (rust stains) on older type floors with nails / staples
Oil based lime washing (no longer used by 'myfloor')
- Has a yellowish apprearance due to oil base
- Darkens considerably over time due to UV exposure
- Must be used in conjunction with an oil based finish
- Long drying period
